Practical Magic

every time I walk down the stairs
wearing socks and carrying my flailing
toddler son, I get visions of myself falling,
so with every step, I slide my heel, then ankle,
then leg down each step, until I feel the firmness
of the step beneath my foot, left then right, then left,
silently repeating, “stable and steady, stable and steady”
